The Influence of Mental Health Literacy on Help-Seeking Behavior in Adolescents Victims of Bullying Experiencing Mental Health Issues
Abstract
Adolescence is a critical developmental stage. In Indonesia, adolescents frequently encounter violence, particularly bullying, both within and outside school. This can lead to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, low self-esteem, and an increased risk of abusive behavior. Recognizing mental health problems is vital for adolescents to identify their issues and seek appropriate help. This study employed a quantitative correlational research method to examine the relationship between mental health literacy and help-seeking behavior. The sample comprised 349 adolescent victims of bullying with mental health issues, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the OBVQ-R scale, the General Health Questionnaire-12, the Mental Health Literacy Questionnaire, and the General Help Seeking scale, distributed via Google Forms. Simple linear regression analysis and t-tests were used for data analysis. The results showed an asymptotic significance value of 0.000 < 0.05 and a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.085 or 8.5%. The findings indicate a positive influence of mental health literacy on help-seeking behavior in adolescent victims of bullying with mental health issues in Indonesia. The implications of this research affirm the importance of enhancing mental health literacy, enabling individuals to easily recognize or seek appropriate help when experiencing mental health issues as a result of bullying.
