Background: Recent focus on understanding factors influencing the outcome of sepsis patients has shifted to minerals and electrolytes like magnesium, an essential mineral that is crucial for maintaining physiological balance and supporting various biochemical functions in the body. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between serum magnesium levels and NEWS in sepsis patients. Methods : A total of 32 sepsis patients were admitted to the ICU at Haji Adam Malik Hospital, Medan, North Sumatra, Indonesia, between December 2023 and February 2024. Upon ICU admission, blood samples were collected and analyzed for serum magnesium levels. NEWS scoring data were extracted from the ICU observation sheet and categorized into low risk (NEWS 0-4), moderate risk (NEWS 5-6) and high risk (NEWS ≥ 7) groups. One-way ANOVA and Spearman’s rank correlation test was conducted on the obtained data. Results : The majority of the subjects were male (59.4%), with a median age of 64 years, and were classified as high risk (68.8%). No significant variations in serum magnesium levels were observed across NEWS risk groups (p = 0.205). However, a moderate negative correlation was found between serum magnesium levels and NEWS (p < 0.001). Conclusion :Monitoring serum magnesium levels in sepsis patients is crucial for assessing risks and identifying those who may benefit from intensive interventions, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes.en_US
