    Abstract
Obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) commonly exhibit muscle atrophy and dysfunction due to a reduction in muscle mass, leading to early fatigue and decondition state. Considered the best predictor of cardiorespiratory endurance and survival, muscle mass can be attenuated by upper extremity endurance training and protein supplementation. Objective : The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of physical exercise and egg white supplementation on muscle mass for COPD patients Methods: . The research employed an experimental study design with two pre- and post-study groups. It involved 38 patients divided into a control and intervention group. All the research participants were subjected to respiratory endurance and upper extremity muscle strength training three times/week for a total 12 weeks. In addition, the patients in the intervention group were also given egg white supplementation (10 egg/day) during the period of intervention in addition to the physical training. The Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were performed to identify the significance of difference between pre- and post-intervention and between the control and intervention group, respectively Results: Our data suggested no significant difference in fat free mass of the patients in the control group before and after 12 weeks of physical exercise (pre-intervention: 48,19 ± 8,17% post-intervention: 49,84 ± 6,96 (p<0.213). On the other hand, there was a significant fat free mass increment of patients in the intervention group upon 3-month of physical training and egg white supplementation (pre-intervention: 48.80 ± 7.03post-intervention: 49,84 ± 6,96 (p<0.003)The Mann Whitney analysis also suggested a significant difference in muscle mass between patients in the control and the intervention groups (p= 0,007). Conclusion:Physical exercise in combination with egg white supplementation given for 12 weeks can increase muscle mass significantly and serve as potential and effective non-pharmacological treatment in COPD patients as compared to physical exercise alone.
