This study aims to determine the effect of emotional regulation seen based on two main strategies, namely cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression on social media addiction in early adulthood. Emotional regulation is a strategy that appears to restrain, strengthen or reduce emotional responses and physiological responses. Social media addiction is the behavior of excessive use of social media and making social media the center of life that can interfere with daily life. The research method used is a quantitative method, with 279 undergraduate students of the University of North Sumatra (M = 20,4 years, SD = 1,79) as research subjects. Data collection used a Likert scale consisting of an emotional regulation scale and a social media addiction scale with a multiple regression analysis method. The results of the study obtained showed that emotional regulation in the cognitive reappraisal strategy had a significant negative relationship with social media addiction (p = 0.046 <0.05). However, the expressive suppression strategy did not have a significant relationship with social media addiction (0.734> 0.05). Then, if we look at the value of the anova test results (F = 0.134>0.05), it can be concluded that there is no joint influence of cognitive reappraisal strategies with expressive suppression strategies on social media addiction. Based on the results of this study, further research is needed on emotional regulation and social media addiction.en_US
