The Relationship between Friendship Types (Reciprocity, Receptivity & Association) and Mental Health in Adolescents
Abstract
This quantitative study aims to analyze the relationship between types of friendship—reciprocity, receptivity, and association—and adolescents' mental health. The respondents comprised 160 high school students aged 14–17 years from St. Maria High School in Medan City, using the Friendship Types Scale and the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). Data analysis included classical assumption tests, consisting of normality tests, and hypothesis tests using Chi-Square tests. The results indicated a strong relationship between the reciprocity and receptivity friendship types and the SDQ difficulties dimension (p- value 0.000; Cramer’s V 0.514 for reciprocity and 0.413 for receptivity). Meanwhile, the association friendship type demonstrated a moderate relationship with the SDQ difficulties dimension (significance 0.000; Cramer’s V 0.394). Furthermore, a moderate relationship was observed between reciprocity, receptivity, and association friendship types and the SDQ strengths dimension (p- value 0.000; Cramer’s V 0.274 for reciprocity, 0.277 for receptivity, and 0.272 for association).
