Overview of Psychological Well Being in Early Adults Who Experience Parental Divorce
Abstract
The impact of divorce is not only felt by married couples, but also has an impact on children. The impact of parental divorce on children is very diverse. Some of the impacts that often occur in children due to parental divorce include feelings of sadness, disappointment, shame about the situation of parental divorce, loneliness, trauma, feelings of not getting enough love and attention from both parents, and a tendency to shut down. These impacts affect various aspects of children's lives, including academics, health, and psychology, especially as they enter early adulthood.
Children who experience parental divorce have the potential to experience psychological problems as a result of the event. Traumatic events resulting from divorce can also affect a person's self-evaluation, which in turn has an impact on psychological well being. Psychological well-being is the result of a person's evaluation of himself, which includes an evaluation of life experiences and self-acceptance, both positively and negatively. This study was conducted to determine the description of psychological well-being in early adults who experience parental divorce.
This research uses a qualitative method with an intrinsic case studi approach. The data collection methods used in this research are interviews with general guidelines and observations made during the interview process. The subjects in this study amounted to two people.
The results showed that in general both subjects had good psychological well-being (PWB) after experiencing parental divorce. Although there are differences in the dimensions of self-acceptance between subject I and subject II which are not good, in the dimensions of positive relationships with others, independence, mastery of the environment, life goals, and self-development, both show good PWB and are almost similar.
