Background. Tension-type headache (TTH) is a common type of primary
headache often experienced by adolescents, especially when facing academic
stress. Academic stress in students can trigger bodily responses that increase the
risk of TTH. Aim. This study aims to analyze the relationship between the level of
academic stress and the incidence of TTH among high school students in Toba
Regency. Method. This observational analytic study used a cross-sectional design
with the Educational Stress Scale for Adolescence (ESSA) to assess academic
stress and the HO K-H & Ong BK-C questionnaire to assess TTH. A
proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample
from a total of 313 students. Data analysis was conducted using the chi-square
test. Results. Of the 313 students, 149 experienced moderate academic stress, and
69 experienced high stress. A significant relationship was found between the level
of academic stress and the incidence of TTH at both schools (p <
0.05). Conclusion. There is a significant relationship between the level of
academic stress and the incidence of TTH among high school students, indicating
that academic stress may be a risk factor for TTH in adolescents.
