    Abstract
The design and performance conditions of the solar photovoltaic cooler are greatly influenced by the climatic conditions in the local area. Solar vapor compression cooling systems with or without load were experimentally studied and analyzed. The research was conducted on the 4th floor of the Mechanical Engineering Postgraduate Building, University of North Sumatra. The results showed that the cooling system could work normally and with a DC compressor working time of 8 hours the cooling system could reach a temperature of -7.9℃ at no-load conditions and 1.3℃ at load conditions. In the 24 hour test under load conditions, the chiller was able to reach a temperature of -8.3℃. When the cooling system works under no-load conditions, the COP value is 3.07 and when under load conditions, COP is 2.83. The average efficiency of photovoltaic solar panels is known to be 11.38% at no load and 10.49% at load. The results of the sizing calculation for a cooling system without a cooling load require a 150Wp photovoltaic solar panel, a 12V 42Ah battery and a 20A solar charge controller. Meanwhile, when the cooling system is working under load, a 200Wp photovoltaic solar panel, a 12V 50Ah battery and a 20A solar charge controller are needed.
