    Abstract
Hanging out can be considered a relaxed activity to fill spare time for migrant students. However, many migrant students stay up late while hanging out. This study was conducted to understand the factors behind the social actions of migrant students in the Padang Bulan area of Medan who hang out at cafes or coffee shops until late at night, and to explore the process that leads them to frequently stay up late while hanging out. This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data collection techniques include observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data display, data verification, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study reveal seven factors that underlie migrant students’ inclination to hang out until late at night. Among these factors, those classified as instrumental-rational are the complete facilities available in cafes, the desire to explore new places, and the sense of freedom away from parental supervision. Second, value-based rational actions include hanging out as a medium for conversation and exchanging ideas. Third, affective actions are driven by the students’ boredom. Finally, traditional actions include parental habits and peer influence.
