Analisis Keberadaan Kafe Remang-Remang di dalam Masyarakat Kecamatan Gunung Maligas Kabupaten Simalungun

Abstract

This study analyzes the existence of dimly-lit cafes in Gunung Maligas District, Simalungun Regency, using Erving Goffman's dramaturgical theory. This research aims to understand the reasons behind the persistence of dimly-lit cafes in a society that upholds traditional values, as well as how people interpret the existence of these cafes. This type of research is qualitative using a case study approach. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews with the community around the café, the café owner, and community leaders. Through dramaturgical theory, this study found that the people of Gunung Maligas tend to show a dual identity: they display adherence to social norms on the “front stage,” while on the “back stage” they are more flexible and even support the existence of cafes for economic needs or personal entertainment. The results show that the existence of dimly lit cafés in Gunung Maligas sub-district not only reflects social dynamics, but also highlights the tension between the maintenance of traditional norms and pressing economic needs in a constantly evolving society.
