Hubungan Karakteristik Demografi dengan Pengetahuan tentang Pemberian Bantuan Hidup Dasar (Basic Life Support) pada Mahasiswa Tingkat Akhir di Fakultas Keperawatan Universitas Sumatera Utara

Abstract

Basic Life Support is a first aid measure for victims of respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. Basic Life Support can be carried out well if the helper has sufficient knowledge and skills. Knowledge can be influenced by age, gender and source of information. This research uses a descriptive correlation research design with cross-sectional approach. The research population encompasses the senior high school in the Faculty of Nursing, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The sample in this research includes 126 people, taken by using probability sampling technique with simple random sampling method. The data analysis used in this research is univariate to describe the frequency distribution of demograpich characteristics and basic life support knowledge. The next analysis is bivariate analysis using Spearman rho test. The student’ knowledge about basic life support falls into “sufficient” category for 60 respondents (47.6%). The result of the correlation test indicate that there is a significant correlation between place of residence (P=0.003) with source of information (P= 0.036) with knowledge, however, there is no significant correlation between gender and knowledge (P=0.402). The research findings show that numerous student’ knowledge fall into sufficient and lacking. Given the importance of Basic Life Support as a foundation of a nurse, enrichment is needed to ensure that the student are able to perform Basic Life Support independently.
