    Abstract
This research is titled “The Issue of Oppression of Female Characters in the Era of Chinese Cultural Revolution in the Memoirs of Nǚfù Niáng Gūniáng Hǎo (女婦娘姑娘好) by Xuē Xīnrán (薛欣然)”. The purpose of the research is to describe the subordination and oppression that occur in female characters. The method used is descriptive qualitative method as a step applied by the author to obtain the required data. The theory used in this research is gender theory by Judith Butler. Data analysis is using the interactive model of qualitative data analysis from Miles and Huberman. The results of this analysis show that the strict regulations and social surveillance from the government and party at that time affected almost every aspect of their lives, from work to personal relationships. The female characters were under severe pressure from the social and political norms established by the regime during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, reinforcing the subordination and oppression of the female characters through the imposition of restricted roles and strict government surveillance. The drastic changes in social and family roles meant that the female characters had to sacrifice their dreams and ambitions in order to fulfill the political and social demands of the Cultural Revolution era. Their loyalty to the ideology, party and leaders forced them to participate in actions that were contrary to their personalities. Many of them suffered persecution and were even subjected to political campaigns targeting individuals perceived as enemies of the ideology, so women faced the added burden of having to handle the demands of the household while facing external pressures.
