Korps Mahasiswa Pencinta Alam dan Studi Lingkungan Hidup Universitas Sumatera Utara [KOMPAS USU] (1980-2011)

Abstract

This research discusses the history of the North Sumatra University Nature and Environmental Studies Student Corps (KOMPAS USU), internal conditions, and KOMPAS USU's contribution to students, the University and society. The method used in this research is to use a qualitative descriptive research method by applying the historical method which consists of five stages including topic selection, heuristics (data collection), verification (source criticism), interpretation (interpretation) and historiography (historical writing). In this study the authors obtained the results that the North Sumatra University Nature Lovers and Environmental Studies Student Corps or KOMPAS USU was officially established on October 06, 1980 by eight students from various faculty backgrounds, which aims to form a formal forum for North Sumatra university students in the field of nature lovers and environmental studies at the University level. KOMPAS USU has a goal of fostering academic people who are aware, capable and responsible for preserving nature as a healthy living environment. In its journey, KOMPAS USU experienced changes in the management structure, Articles of Association & Bylaws, Education System, and renewal of activities that were adjusted to the tri dharma of higher education. KOMPAS USU has experienced a crisis of ordinary members which has an impact on the unstable internal conditions of the organization, overcoming this problem KOMPAS USU changed the membership status system at the member meeting in 2011. KOMPAS USU not only focuses on outdoor adventure activities, KOMPAS USU is able to win various competitions that make the University of North Sumatra proud. KOMPAS USU also plays a role in environmental advocacy aimed at the public interest.
