The Difference Of Internet Addiction in Adolescents Reviewed from Family Communication Patterns
Abstract
This study aims to examine the differences in internet addiction in adolescents in terms of family communication patterns which include four types: consensual, pluralistic, protective, and laissez-faire. This study involved 403 respondents aged 15-18 years (M = 16.3, SD = 0.83) in Medan, selected using a cluster random sampling technique. Data in this study were collected through a questionnaires consisting of the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale developed by Andreassen (2012), which includes 18 items, and The Revised Family Communication Pattern developed by Koerner & Fitzpatrick (2006), which includes 26 items. The data analysis technique used the Anova test to identify differences among family communication pattern groups. The results of the one-way ANOVA test indicated a p-value of 0.213 (p > 0.05), The results showed that there was no significant difference in the level of internet addiction in adolescents based on the type of family communication pattern. The study also found that the average scores of internet addiction for each family communication pattern type were relatively close.
