A vortex turbine is a kind of hydrodynamic turbine that converts the kinetic energy of
a water vortex into mechanical energy that spins a shaft. Low water flow heights,
around 0.7 to 2 meters, are suitable for operating vortex turbines. This research will
discuss the design of a vortex turbine with a water discharge of 0.029 m3/s to produce
100 watts of turbine power. The whirlpool hydropower system is an innovative
technology that utilizes energy from large whirlpools generated by low head
differences in rivers. A vortex turbine has been designed with the main dimensions,
namely, a cylindrical basin type with a diameter of 1 m, a height of 0.8 m, and an outlet
hole size of 0.15 m. The water discharge in this design is 0.029 m3/s with a water
velocity entering the basin of 0.3 m/s. The blade type used is an inclined blade with a
diameter of 0.7 m and a height of 0.45 m. For transmission using a pulley with a ratio
on the turbine shaft and generator of 1: 10 which aims to increase the rotation of the
generator. The turbine shaft uses 304 Stainless Steel material with a diameter of 21
mm.
