Background: NIHSS (The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale) is one of the clinical screening tools to evaluated severity of stroke that had been used globally. One of the tests were subtest item 9 and 10 to evalute aphasia and dysathtria respectively which never been adapted in Indonesia.
Objective: For this study, adjusting to culture and language of Indonesia people, we aim to determine the validity and reliability of Indonesia version of the NIHSS (I-NIHSS) for the Indonesia stroke patients focusing in subtest aphasia and dysarthria.
Methods: The I-NIHSS was adapted and validated based on transcultural WHO methods and language aspect was translated in two way (forward and backward translation). Evaluation of content validity index using Aiken coefficient which rated by 9 rater. The realibility of Indonesian version using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which later the translated version is evaluated by pilot study among stroke patients from North Sumatera University (n=30).
Results: The valididity of I-NIHSS was > 0,8 (high validity, > 0,8) with Cronbach's alpha > 0,6 considered good reliability.
Conclusion: The subtest of Aphasia and Dysarthria NIHSS- Indonesia’s version is a valid and reliable tool for screening aphasia and dysarhtria in stroke patients.
