    Abstract
Periodontal disease is a condition characterized by inflammation of the periodontal tissue. The inflammation is induced by plaque-forming or biofilm-forming bacteria, one of which is Staphylococcus aureus. Prevention of plaque accumulation through mechanical and chemical plaque control, or a combination of both. Plaque control is commonly done by brushing teeth combined with toothpaste. However, the composition of toothpaste can cause side effects, so many researchers have started developing toothpaste from natural ingredients. Pineapple humps (Ananas comosus L. Merr) contain secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, saponins, and steroids, which have antibacterial activity. The aim of this research is to analyze and determine the effectiveness of toothpaste made from pineapple humps extract (Ananas comosus L. Merr) against the growth of S. aureus bacteria. The type of this research is a laboratory experimental study with a post-test only control group design. The research sample is the S. aureus ATCC®29213 bacteria. This study was tested using the well diffusion method on Nutrient Agar (NA) media with five repetitions, followed by observation. The results of this study show that toothpaste with pineapple humps extract (Ananas comosus L. Merr) at concentrations of 10%, 15%, and 20% has inhibition zone diameters of 13.62 mm, 16.62 mm, and 18.48 mm respectively, which fall into the strong category. Toothpaste mixed with 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate (positive control) has the largest inhibition zone diameter of 20.35 mm. The basic mouthwash has no effectiveness because a clear zone does not form. The difference is statistically significant.
