Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of increasing cigarette excise on cigarette
purchase decisions among students of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences,
Universitas Sumatera Utara. In line with the government's efforts to reduce the
prevalence of smoking and increase state revenue, the cigarette excise increase policy
has become one of the instruments relied upon.
This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey as a data collection
method, involving respondents who are active smokers at the Faculty of Social and
Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The results of the study indicate that the
increase in cigarette excise has a significant effect on reducing the number of cigarette
purchases, although the effect varies based on the income level and smoking habits of
respondents.
These findings provide insight for policymakers to consider socio-economic
factors in designing more effective excise policies. Overall, cigarette excise increases can
be an effective tool in reducing cigarette consumption, but the impact is not always linear
for all levels of society.
