Background
Headaches are experienced by nearly everyone around the world, especially migraines and tension-type headaches. The underlying pathophysiological mechanisms of these conditions remain a topic of debate. One theory proposed relates to inflammation and nutrition. Inflammation occurs in both migraines and TTH (tension-type headache). Micronutrients such as vitamin D play a role as anti-inflammatory agents that can suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines like interleukin 6(IL-6), which may play a role in the occurrence of migraines and TTH.
Objective
This study was conducted to determine the relationship between vitamin D levels and IL-6 in patients with TTH and migraines.
Methods
This research employed a cross-sectional design on patients with migraines and TTH. The subjects included 37 people from the migraine group and 37 people from the TTH group. Patients underwent human IL-6 ELISA and 25-hydroxy vitamin D ELISA tests to measure the levels of IL-6 and vitamin D in their bodies.
Results
Based on the study results, a significant relationship was found between vitamin D levels and IL-6 in migraine patients (p=0.049, r=-0.325), However, no significant relationship was found between vitamin D levels and IL-6 in TTH patients (p=0.307, r=-0.065).
Conclusion
Based on the results presented, it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between vitamin D and IL-6 in migraine patients, whereas no significant relationship exists between vitamin D levels and IL-6 in TTH patients.
