Malocclusion is one of the dental health problems that can affect a person's
quality of life, especially in adolescents who are very concerned about aesthetics. This
research aims to determine the need for orthodontic treatment based on the Index of
Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), which consists of the Aesthetic Component (AC)
and the Dental Health Component (DHC), and analyze its relationship with quality of
life based on the Child Oral Health Impact Profile Short Form (COHIP-SF 19). This
research used an analytical observational method conducted at SMP Negeri 30 Medan.
A total of 84 students were selected as samples using a simple random sampling
method. The results showed that based on the IOTN-AC, the majority of respondents
85,7% required no or only mild treatment, 8,3% required moderate treatment, and 6%
had a high need for treatment. Based on the IOTN-DHC, 65,5% required no or only
mild treatment, 11,9% required moderate treatment, and 22,6% required severe
treatment. The analysis of the relationship between orthodontic treatment needs and
quality of life showed a weak and statistically insignificant correlation (p > 0,05). In
conclusion, most adolescents at SMP Negeri 30 Medan had mild orthodontic treatment
needs, and there is no significant relationship was found between malocclusion and
quality of life.
