Culture is a belief, behavior or way of life that influences a person to
respond to his environment which is passed down from generation to generation to
the next generation. The Batak tribe is one of the tribes in Indonesia, the majority
of whom live on the island of Sumatra. The Batak tribe is divided into six sub-tribes,
one of which is the Toba Batak tribe. The Toba Batak tribe has a diverse cultural
heritage, one of which is the traditional woven cloth, namely ulos batak. Ulos is a
traditional Batak woven cloth in the form of a shawl. Along with the times, many
people are attracted by the beauty of this traditional cloth. This creates opportunities
for ulos to develop into ready-to-use products that are the latest fashion.
The opportunity and potential for the ulos batak to become a thriving art and
culture led to the idea of designing an ulos museum and gallery. The ulos museum
and gallery are a medium for the preservation of ulos batak as well as a place for
artists and weavers of ulos to display and sell the handicrafts and weaving of ulos
for the local community. This museum and gallery is a space for local and foreign
tourists to learn how to make ulos directly. This building was designed with a neovernacular
architectural approach that refers to the philosophy and shape of the
Toba Batak Village and Toba Batak traditional house.
