Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia An Opportunistic Infection
Abstract
Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is an opportunistic infection occurs in immunosuppressed populations. Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia is caused by Pneumocystis jiroveci, an organism with characteristic structures resembles to protozoa and also sensitive to anti parasite drugs. But later on, based on the reseach for the molecular biology of the RNA, Pneumocystis jiroveci then categorized as a fungi with close-relation to Askomikotina. Transmission is assumed by respiratory droplet infection, with the cyst form as the infective stage to human. The disease has become increasingly recognized worldwide with the epidemic of AIDS. Since the onset of the disease is fast and sometimes overlooked in immunocompromized patients, the prognosis is poor due to the respiratory failure which leads to mortality.
