Kombinasi Ragam Budaya pada Elemen Pembentuk Ruang Masjid Raya Al-Mashun Medan

Abstract

Along with the times, architecture began to develop. The same applies to Muslim houses of worship, as known as mosques. The first mosque was built very simply and only uses modest materials. With Islam which is growing and entering various parts of the world, different cultures are interrelated and influence one another. As a result, the shape of the mosque began to develop slowly following the habbits and adapting to the local characteristics/climate. Oftenly space-forming elements of the mosque are combined with various different cultures. One of them is the Al-Mashun Grand Mosque in Medan. According to the official website of the Culture and Tourism Office of the Province of North Sumatra, the mosque, which is the work of Van Erp, which was carried out by JA Tingdemen, is a blend of Middle Eastern, Indian, Spanish architecture with the local Malay culture. The variety blends of cultures that are incorporated make me interested in reviewing the truth of the information. That's why the main purpose of this research is to find a combination of cultures related to the space-forming elements at the Al-Mashun Grand Mosque in Medan. The research will focus on the space-forming elements of this oldest mosque in North Sumatra. The type of research that the researcher uses is a qualitative research, where the data obtained through direct observation and documentation in the field, will be compared with the related literature review that has been collected. Data analysis is done descriptively, through analysis I’m going to describes the space-forming elements that are combined with more than one culture and how the shape of the combination take place. The results of this research will show which space-forming elements are combined with more than one culture and how the forms of cultural combinations in each space-forming element of Masjid Raya Al-Mashun Medan.
