This thesis is entitled, "Types and Functions of Oles in the Batak Pakpak Ethnic
Group, a Study of Local Wisdom". The purpose of this thesis is to describe the
types of ointments in the Batak Pakpak ethnic group and to describe the local
wisdom contained in each ointment of the Batak Pakpak ethnic group. The theory
used in this thesis is the theory of local wisdom by Robert Sibarani. The research
method used is a qualitative research method with an interactive model. The
results obtained in this thesis, namely Based on the results of the research that has
been conducted, there are 7 types of ointments in the Batak Pakpak ethnic group,
namely Oles Perdabaitak, Oles Sorisori Sampur, Oles Pelangpelang, Oles
Takaltakal, Oles Perbunga Mbacang, Oles Cumancuman, Oles Sidosdos. The
functions of the ethnic Batak Pakpak ointment include (1) Oles Perdabaitak
functions as a blessing in the form of "upah puhun" at the traditional merbayo
"wedding" ceremony and as an expression of gratitude at the traditional males
bulung tutupa ceremony, (2) Oles Sorisori Sampur functions as an expression of
gratitude in the form of "kaing siso siat" at the traditional merbayo "wedding"
ceremony and as a blessing at the mengrumbang ceremony, (3) Oles
Pelangpelang functions as a gift and expression of gratitude in the form of gaji
turang "brother to sister" at the traditional merbayo "wedding" ceremony, and an
expression of gratitude in the form of penelangken mbellen "eldest sister from the
father" at the traditional merbayo "wedding" ceremony, (4) Oles Takaltakal
functions as a dowry in the form of takal ujuken "gift to the woman" at the
traditional merbayo "wedding" ceremony, (5). Oles Perbunga Mbacang serves as
an expression of gratitude in the form of a “father's sister” wage at the
“wedding” ceremony, (6). Oles Cumancuman serves as a sign of separation in the
form of a spoiled child wage at the “wedding” ceremony, (7). Oles Sidosdos is a
blessing in the form of an empung wage at the “wedding” ceremony. Overall local
wisdom in the Oles of the Batak Pakpak ethnic group includes welfare and peace,
namely hard work, health, trustworthiness, and gratitude.
