Representation of the Word 'Teenager' in the Online Media: A Study of the Corpus Based-Discourse
Abstract
News about teenagers in mass media is usually associated with juvenile
delinquency. The objective of the research is to find out the representation of the
word 'teenager' in the online media, Detikcom, from 2022 to 2024, based on
corpus based-discourse. The research uses mixed methods from corpus data
arranged from news articles of Detikcom concerning the issues of teenagers. The
corpus has the total of 325,313 tokens and 26,652 word types. 45 words (15
collocations per word class) such as nominal, adjectival, and verbal collocations
are taken through collocation analysis which are collocated with the word
'teenager'. There are collocations which explicitly indicate negative meaning
such as naughtiness, brawls, gangs, indecency, mischievous actions, brutality,
sadism, drunk, being killed, and fight. Besides that, there are also words which
indicate positive meaning such as courage, romantic, and overcoming. Based on
concordance analysis on collocate data, the category of semantic prosody mostly
found is negative absolute in 26 collocations, followed by 13 collocations in
negative extreme flexible category. Meanwhile, positive absolute catego,y and
positive extreme flexible category have three collocations respectively. Based on
textual analysis it can be seen how the choice and combination of words can form
narration that either in individual form or in groups, teenagers often commit
criminal acts which disturbs public peace. Based on discursive practice analysis,
it is found that public opinion about teenagers is almost the same as the online
media which is dominated by negative news about them. In the social level,
cultural context exposed in the online media, Detikcom, indicates that, in reality,
teenagers are associated with negative values. These aspects eventually establish
teenager discourse which can affect public opinion about them and how they are
treated.
