Identifikasi Kandungan Logam Merkuri pada Lotion Pemutih yang Dijual di Padang Bulan

Abstract

Background: Cosmetics containding mercury have been banned because they can be dangerous to health,mercury in cosmetic preparations can cause skin discoloration,allergies,skin irritation, permanent damage to the kidneys, nerves and human brain. Objective: This study aims to determine wheather there is mercury in the whitening lotion. Method: The samples analyzed were 5 whitening lotoin preparations sold in Medan City (samples A, B, C, D, and E). Determination of mercury in whitening lotion using a qualitative method by adding potassium iodide. If the sample solution is added with 0,5 N KI and there is an orange to red precipitate then the sample is declared positive for containing mercury. Results: The research results showed that the whitening lotion with sample codes A, C, D and E was negative for containing mercury, while the sample with code B was positive for containing mercury. Conclusion: Samples coded A, C, D and E are negative for containing mercury, while samples with code B are positive for containing mercury and do not comply with the Regulations Of The Head Of The Food And Drug Supervisory Agency HK.03.1.23.08.11.07517 of 2011
