Introduction : Vital Pulp Therapy (VPT) can be used as a treatment option for reversible and irreversible pulpitis in mature teeth. The commonly used materials still have shortcomings, thus requiring the development of other materials. The nano-chitosan propolis membrane shows potential for use in dental tissue regeneration. Formation of reparative dentin marks the success of VPT. Osteopontin (OPN) plays a crucial role in reparative dentin formation. This study aims to analyze the ability of the nano-chitosan propolis membrane to induce reparative dentin formation and OPN expression.
Material and methods : 30 maxillary molar teeth from 10 Rattus norvegicus strain Wistar were induced with reversible pulpitis and treated with nano-chitosan propolis membrane, nano-chitosan membrane, and MTA followed by RMGIC restoration. Histological assessment of reparative dentin formation and immunohistochemical evaluation of OPN expression were conducted on 5 randomly selected Rattus norvegicus 14 days post-treatment. The remaining Rattus norvegicus underwent similar examinations 30 days post-treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests.
Results : The Kruskal-Wallis test regarding reparative dentin formation and OPN expression showed no significant differences between all material groups on day 14 and day 30 observations. Mann-Whitney test regarding differences in reparative dentin formation and OPN expression among the material groups showed no significant differences on both time observations.
Conclusion : This study suggests that nano-chitosan propolis membrane, nano-chitosan membrane, and MTA can stimulate reparative dentin formation and OPN expression on day 14 and day 30.
