Design of an Active Aging Center with a Universal Design Approach in Medan
Abstract
Indonesia faces a significant aging population phenomenon due to the successful Family Planning program since the 1970s. With the increasing proportion of elderly, Medan City also experiences substantial growth in the elderly population, creating new challenges in enhancing healthy living quality and elderly well-being. Data show that many elderly in Indonesia suffer from health complaints and loneliness, which can affect their quality of life. Therefore, facilities that support active social interaction and various activities for the elderly are needed. The design of an Active Aging Center in Medan City is a strategic step to enhance social participation and elderly well-being, in line with the WHO concept. With universal design, this facility will ensure inclusivity and accessibility for all elderly, supporting their physical and mental health, and improving their overall quality of life.
