Design of a Mental Rehabilitation Center for Cancer Patients with a Biophilic Architecture Approach in Medan City
Abstract
Indonesia is one of the countries in recent years that has experienced
an increase in the number of cancer patients. Patients with cancer
should get more attention to continue their health. According to the
medical, chemotherapy can be considered more effective because the
drug is given directly through the blood vessels, so that it can reach
cancer cells that have metastasized to other tissues. The effect of this
chemotherapy also stimulates the patient with various effects such as
nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea and can also interfere
with the mental health of the patient. Therefore, a forum is needed to
increase their interest in their life by improving their mental health.
In this design, a biophilic architectural approach is applied as a solution
to overcome these mental problems. With a natural approach to
patients, it can enable patients to increase their immunity and make
patients calmer by seeing nature and open spaces. The building will be
designed with voids, open roofs and large windows so that air and light
can enter the building. Natural materials, with lots of greenery, using wood, brick and
bamboo to create an atmosphere that blends with nature. The
facilities that will be provided will also prioritize the patient's
mental health. By providing a meditation room, play room,
music room, yoga or sports room and many others in order to
improve and calm the minds of patients so they don't get too
stressed about their illness.
It is hoped that with the available facilities and programs, this
design can help patients and also their families to be calmer
and feel comfortable like a second home.
