dc.description.abstract | Background
E-cigarettes are a modern form of conventional cigarettes. Although considered relatively safe, e-cigarettes still contain toxic substances. These cigarettes produce aerosols that contain nicotine. The main product of nicotine metabolism is cotinine which is found in plasma, urine and saliva. Cotinine can be used as a biomarker for nicotine use in Nicotine dependence can be assessed using a questionnaire, one of which is the PSNDI. This study was to find a correlation between urinary cotinine and nicotine dependence in male e-cigarette users
Method
A cross-sectional study using consecutive sampling was conducted on 72 male e-cigarette users in 2023. All study subjects were interviewed and examined of urine cotinine using the immunochromatography assay method. The Penn State Nicotine Dependent Index (PSNDI) questionnaire is filled only by user whose urine cotinine is positive to determine the level of urinary dependence. Then the Mann-Whitney and Chi-square statistical tests were performed.
Results
Age ≤ 30 years is the most age of e-cigarette users, the most participants in general medical professional education for education, POD is the most used type of e-cigarette. There was no effect of urinary cotinine on the level of nicotine dependence in e-smokers (p>0.05). The factors that influenced nicotine dependency in e-smokers were age (p<0.05) and duration of e-cigarette smoking (p<0.05). As many as (65.3%) male who is nicotine dependence.
Conclusion
There is a statistically significant relationship between age and nicotine dependence in male electric user. Smoking duration and nicotine dependence in male e-cigarette users has a statistically significant relationship. There is no statistically significant relationship between urinary cotinine and the level of nicotine dependence in male e-cigarette user | en_US |
