Modified asphalt performs well when additives are added to the conventional asphalt mixture. Adding additives such as plastic waste and rubber waste improves the mechanical performance of asphalt and offers a solution to environmental problems caused by waste. This study evaluates the effect of adding styrofoam waste and crumb rubber in the Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixture.
This study was conducted experimentally in the laboratory using the wet method when mixing styrofoam and crumb rubber waste into the Asphalt Concrete Wearing Course (AC-WC) mixture. First, asphalt was combined with styrofoam waste with variations in content of 7%, 8%, and 9% of the weight of the asphalt mixture. Then, asphalt was mixed using the optimum content of styrofoam and the addition of crumb rubber waste with variations in content of 8%, 9%, 10%, 11%, and 12% of the weight of the asphalt mixture. The tests carried out were the Marshall Test and the Wheel Tracking Test Machine (WTM) and the Extraction test.
The Marshall Test results show that the optimum content of styrofoam waste is obtained with a variation of 8% content of the asphalt mixture weight, with a stability value of 1260 kg. While the combination of the optimum content of styrofoam waste and crumb rubber waste is obtained with a variation of 8% content for styrofoam waste and 8% for crumb rubber waste, with a stability value of 1825 kg. From the WTM test results, it is known that the dynamic stability value indicates that the mixture with the addition of styrofoam waste and crumb rubber has better resistance to rutting.
