Street Art as a Media for Art Appreciation and Public Exhibition in Medan
Abstract
Street Art or commonly known as “Seni Jalanan” is one of the works of the Urban
Community that is currently developing in Medan . Meanwhile, the works produced from
street art tend to be mostly in the field of murals or graffiti which are made with the aim of
being a symbol of expression and appreciation of the community.
The research method used in this study is using a qualitative research method in the
form of interview techniques, documentation techniques, literature studies and primary and
secondary data. The results of the research in this paper discuss the essence of mural art and
graffiti art in Medan , then the types of mural art and graffiti art and forms of street art
practice in Medan and view street art from the perspective of art anthropology using
elements of work, elements of artists and elements of public art by involving several street
artists and the perspective of society in viewing street art in Medan. This paper also uses
Bordeaux Theory, namely Arena Theory, which explains the competition between capital
owners and dominance strategies in analyzing the bargaining process carried out by street
artists in renting places used as media for creating street art.
The analysis of this paper reviews the works of mural and graffiti artists. The
conclusion of this study answers the question of how public art in Medan is a form of
cultural expression and how murals and graffiti are related to public art appreciation and
how the bargaining process is carried out by street artists in creating street art works.
