Soft denture liner (SDL) is a soft denture coating material that provides a spongy and soft surface between the denture base and the oral mucosa to reduce pain and discomfort and ensure accurate adaptation to the denture base area. Dentures coated with SDL require proper care because bacteria and fungi are known to easily form colonies and penetrate SDL-applied dentures. Chemical cleaning is the primary choice for plaque control on SDL-applied dentures as it can thoroughly clean the denture surface. Alkaline peroxide is an effective chemical cleaning solution that dissolves dirt with a cleaning action that can eliminate bacteria and germs on dentures. On the other hand, alkaline peroxide is known to have a drawback: it can affect surface hardness. This study aims to determine the effect of immersion in alkaline peroxide solution on the surface hardness of self-polymerizing silicone long-term soft denture liners (LTSDL) based on wear time. The research samples used were 28 self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL materials made with a cylindrical master model measuring 15 mm in diameter and 10 mm thick for surface hardness measurement (n=28). Samples were divided into 4 groups (n=7). Samples were first immersed for 24 hours in bidistilled water at 37°C in an incubator to simulate the oral cavity. After that, samples were immersed in alkaline peroxide cleaning solution and bidistilled water as a control for an estimated time of 2 days (6 months) and 4 days (12 months). Surface hardness was measured using a Shore A Durometer with 3 repetitions for each sample and expressed in Shore Hardness Units (SHU). All sample data were then analyzed. The mean and standard deviation of surface hardness were analyzed using a univariate test, and the effect of immersion in alkaline peroxide solution on the surface hardness of self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL based on wear time was analyzed using an independent t-test. The results of this study are as follows: the mean and standard deviation of self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL surface hardness after immersion in bidistilled water for 2 days was 20.24 ± 0.42 SHU; in alkaline peroxide for 2 days was 23.67 ± 1.17 SHU; in bidistilled water for 4 days was 27.48 ± 0.79 SHU; and in alkaline peroxide for 4 days was 31.76 ± 1.29 SHU. Based on the independent t-test results, there was an effect of immersing self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL in alkaline peroxide for 2 and 4 days on surface hardness. Furthermore, the independent t-test results also showed a difference in surface hardness between self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL immersed in alkaline peroxide for 2 and 4 days. In this study, it can be concluded that self-polymerizing silicone LTSDL immersed in alkaline peroxide denture cleaner can be used for one year of wear because the increase in surface hardness is still within the ISO range.en_US
