    Abstract
Background: Melasma is an acquired chronic hypermelanosis that, not only causes cosmetic disfigurement, but also psychosocial distress. Barangan banana peel is a waste product with high phenolic and flavonoid content that contributes to inhibition of melanogenesis. The use of 0.5% nanoparticle barangan banana peel extract serum is therefore expected to play a role in melasma management. Objective: To determine the effect of 0.5% nanoparticle Barangan banana (Musa acuminata L.) peel extract serum as lightening agent in melasma. Subject and Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study using pretest-posttest design on 50 female patients with melasma with age ranging from 20–50-years-old. The diagnosis was done clinically and the severity was assessed using Melasma Severity Index (MSI) before and after the application of 0.5% nanoparticle Barangan banana peel extract serum, as well as its adverse effects and how it affects the patient’s quality of life. The decrease of MSI was analyzed using Friedman test and followed by post-hoc test to assess the of clinical improvement. The data was considered significant if p<0,05. Results: Majority of the participants in this study were in the age group of 40–50 years-old (78%) with a mean age of 44,04±5,24 years-old. The decrease of MSI after application of nanoparticle barangan banana peel extract serum was significant (p<0,001). In this study, no adverse effect was reported. There was a significant (p<0,001) decrease in MELASQOL, that showed improvement in patient’s quality of life after using the serum. Conclusion: The use of 0.5% nanoparticle Barangan banana (Musa acuminata L.) peel extract serum can improve the clinical appearance and quality of life in melasma patients without any side effects.
