Employee burnout occurs when job demands are out of balance with job resources. Managers have a role to play in addressing this imbalance. Engaging leadership is a new concept with a strong theoretical basis compared to other leadership styles. The study was to determine the impact of engaging leadership on the tendency to burnout, with positive affect as a mediating variable. Participants were 322 employees from companies and government agencies in Indonesia. Data analysis used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) via SmartPLS bootstrapping feature. The findings indicated that engaging leadership positively and significantly impacts positive affect. Moreover, engaging leadership only had an indirect effect on burnout – via positive affect, but not a direct effect. Affect positive fully mediates that model. According to these findings, the workplace can decrease the tendency of employee burnout through the behaviors of engaged leaders, which increases the positive affect on employees. Limitations, empirical issues, and important future research questions are discussed.
