dc.description.abstractBackground: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is a multi- component disease characterized by mucus hypersecretion, airway narrowing, and alveolar damage. The prevalence of COPD in Southeast Asian countries is estimated at 6.3%, with the highest prevalence in Vietnam. Mortality rates for COPD in men are 11.8% and 8.5% in women. In 2016, COPD ranked fourth in causes of death, with a mortality rate of 18.6 per 100,000 people. The detection of increased eosinophil concentration and related pro-inflammatory factors in the airways and blood of COPD patients highlights the active role of eosinophils in the inflammatory process in COPD. Objective: This study aimed to determine the difference in eosinophil levels between COPD Group B and Group E patients. Methods: This study employed an observational analytic design using a case- control approach. The analysis focused on the difference in eosinophil levels between COPD Group B and Group E patients. A total of 31 patients participated in the study. Results: A total of 110 patients were included in the study, with most patients aged 59–61 years (31.11%) and predominantly male (90%). Patients exhibited mild to moderate dyspnea (19.4%) and had a history of heavy smoking (80%). Most patients (29%) had experienced one previous exacerbation episode, and the majority had a middle school or high school education level, reflecting the socio- economic status of COPD patients (37%). Conclusion: This study found no significant difference in eosinophil levels between COPD Group B and Group E patients. The null hypothesis (H₀), stating no difference in eosinophil levels between the two groups, was accepted, while the alternative hypothesis (Hₐ), suggesting a difference, was rejected.
