Background: Cancer is a disease caused by cell growth, due to damage to genes that regulate cell growth and differentiation. This cell division is uncontrolled, then attacks and damages other biological tissues, cancer patients usually complain of severe and prolonged pain.
Method: This study is a case study involving 3 cancer patients with chronic pain and undergoing chemotherapy in the RB6 room of H. Adam Malik General Hospital, Medan. Non-pharmacological interventions were given for three consecutive days in the form of lavender aromatherapy, guided imagery and acupressure. Measurements were taken before and after the intervention using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) for pain, the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS) for pain coping, and the Rhodes Index of Nausea, Vomiting, and Retching (RINVR) for nausea and vomiting.
Results: After three days of intervention, the evaluation results showed that all patients experienced a decrease in pain intensity from severe to mild, changes in pain coping from bad to good and sufficient, and a decrease in complaints of nausea and vomiting from moderate and severe to mild. Patients also showed a cooperative attitude and stated that they felt more relaxed and comfortable during therapy.
Conclusion: The combination of lavender aromatherapy, guided imagery, and acupressure is effective in reducing pain intensity, increasing pain coping abilities, and reducing symptoms of nausea and vomiting in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
