The Utilization of Kemuning (Murraya paniculata L. Jack) Leaf Ethanol Extract in Gel Formulation
Abstract
The kemuning (Murraya paniculata L. Jack) plant grows wild in shrubs,
forest edges, or is planted as an ornamental plant and hedge plant. Yellow leaves are
known for their traditional benefits for smoothing the skin. However, the utilization
of kemuning leaves in pharmaceutical preparations is still very rare. Face masks are
one of the most widely recognized skincare products among the public. Masks are
able to stimulate circulation of blood flow and spleen, improve the skin regeneration
process, and increase nutrition to facial skin tissues. Gel mask preparations are in
great demand by the drug and cosmetic industry because they have advantages over
other preparations, namely good distribution on the skin, a cool effect when applied
to the skin, good drug release, and easy washing. This study aims to determine
whether ethanol extract of kemuning leaves can be formulated as a gel mask
preparation. Preparation of ethanol extract of kemuning leaves by maceration
method using 96% ethanol solvent. Formulation of gel mask preparations was made
with variations in concentration of ethanol extract of yellow leaves 2%, 4%, 6%, 8%,
and 10%. The gel preparation was then subjected to organoleptic test, homogeneity
test, viscosity test, pH test, and irritation test. The results showed that the gel mask
preparation is gel-shaped, yellowish clear in color, has a distinctive rose aroma, is
homogeneous, has a pH range of 4.5-6.5, a viscosity value of 9740-9770 cPs, and
does not cause irritation. Formulation F4 is the best gel mask and can potentially be
used as a pharmaceutical product.
