The production 2-Ethylhexyl Laurate from esterification reaction of Lauric
acid with 2-ethylhexanol with lipase enzyme as catalyst under microwave irradiation
has been conducted. The parameters studied in this study were the effect of lipase
enzyme catalyst weight and molar ratio of lauric acid to 2-ethylhexanol. The
confirmation of 2-ethylhexyl laurate formation was studi using FT-IR and LC-MS
spectrophotometer while the conversion was determined by alkalimetric titration. The
formation of ester groups from the resulting 2-ethylhexyl laurate is characterized by
the presence of a peak at wave number 1714,6 cm-1
showing stretching vibrations of
carbonyl groups (C=O) indicating the presence of esters and supported by the
presence of asymmetric and symmetric C-O stretching vibrations at wavenumbers of
1230 cm-1 and 1036,2 cm-1
. The LC-MS spectra showed the fragmentation pattern
identical to 2-ethylhexyl laurate with ration m/z 297, 257, and 234. The maximum
conversion of 93.50 ± 1.98% for lipase enzyme catalyst weight parameter was
achieved under reaction condition of 3% catalyst weight, 1:2 moles ratio, 10 minutes
reaction time and 20% microwave power. For the parameter of moles ratio, the
maximum conversion of 97.65 ± 1.18% was obtained at a ratio of 1:3, 3% catalyst
weight, 10 minutes reaction time, and 20% microwave power.
