| dc.description.abstract | Traditional Javanese music, particularly gamelan, is a cultural expression rich in philosophical and symbolic meanings. Each instrument in the ensemble serves not only a musical purpose but also represents values that reflect the worldview of Javanese society.
This paper aims to describe the meaning and function of traditional Javanese musical instruments, and to highlight their role in conveying spiritual, cultural, and social messages.
The study employs a qualitative descriptive method through library research, using data from academic books, journal articles, and digital archives related to Javanese gamelan music.
The findings show that each instrument—such as demung, saron, gambang, kenong, slenthem, gender, and siter—carries symbolic meanings such as wisdom, harmony, creativity, and intuition. Functionally, these instruments work together to form a cohesive musical and cultural structure that serves ritual, social, and artistic purposes.
Traditional Javanese music is more than sound; it is a living cultural heritage that embodies moral teachings and spiritual reflection. Preserving and promoting its values is essential for maintaining Indonesia's cultural identity.
