Profile of Superficial Dermatophytosis Patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital
Abstract
Background. Dermatophytosis is a type of fungal infection that affects body tissues with high keratin content, such as the stratum corneum of hair, skin, and nails. This disease is still common in tropical climates with high humidity, such as Indonesia. Objective. This study aims to determine the profile of superficial dermatophytosis patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Hospital, University of North Sumatra in 2020-2024. Methods. This study used a retrospective descriptive method. The sample used was superficial dermatophytosis patients at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis Universitas Sumatera Utara Hospital, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan, 20155, INDONESIA, from 2020 to 2024, using a total sampling method. Results and Discussion. Of the 210 superficial dermatophytosis patients, the majority were aged 18-59 years (54.8%), female (51.0%), unemployed (29.0%), and had no comorbidities (81.0%). The most common type of dermatophytosis was tinea corporis (55.7%), with the most common clinical manifestation being erythema (71.4%). The most common diagnosis was made without examination (64.3%). The most common treatment was ketoconazole (82.9%). The majority of successful therapies are experiencing improvement (79.0%), and the most frequent treatment duration was <2 weeks (68.6%). Conclusion. Most dermatophytosis patients were adults and female, with the most common type being tinea corporis. This condition is more common in individuals with poor personal hygiene and humid environments. Most patients responded well to therapy. Therefore, education is needed regarding the importance of maintaining personal and environmental hygiene to prevent dermatophytosis infections.
