    Abstract
    Kisho Kurokawa adalah arsitek Jepang yang merupakan salah satu pendiri kelompok pergerakan Metabolisme. Setelah pembubaran kelompok Metabolisme, Kisho Kurokawa fokus pada pengembangan ide, metode, dan konsep arsitekturalnya sendiri, yaitu Simbiosis. Seperti Metabolisme, Simbiosis juga berasal dari istilah Biologi dan menurut Kisho Kurokawa ada keterkaitan dengan filsafat Buddha. Simbiosis Kisho Kurokawa adalah perpaduan Arsitektur Modern, Tradisional Jepang dan Filosofi Buddha. Sementara itu, Tradisional Jepang dan Filosofi Buddha telah berinteraksi (bersimbiosis) sejak masa pemerintahan Shogun yang panjang. Ambiguitas, kekosongan, pencerahan, kesadaran/kewaspadaaan dan dharma adalah filosofi Buddha utama terutama Mahayana, di Jepang disebut Buddha Zen. Menurut Kurokawa, Arsitektur Modern tidak berjiwa. Maka dengan metode Simbiosis, Kisho Kurokawa dapat memanifestasikan jiwa ke dalam karyanya. Tesis ini akan membahas secara kualitatif deskriptif 'bagaimana' dan 'seperti apa' simbiosis yang dilakukan Kurokawa terhadap tiga elemen yang mempengaruhi desainnya, yaitu Arsitektur Modern – Filosofi Buddha – Tradisional Jepang.
     
    Kisho Kurokawa was a Japanese architect who was one of the founders of Metabolism movement. After this movement was disbanded, he was focused on developing his own architectural idea, method, and concept: Symbiosis. Like Metabolism, Symbiosis also comes from the term of Biology, and according to Kisho Kurokawa, it has the connection with Buddhist philosophy. Kurokawa’s symbiosis is the combination of modern architecture with Japanese tradition and Buddhist Philosophy. Meanwhile, Japanese tradition and Buddhist Philosophy have interacted (symbiotic) since the long period of Shogun regime. Ambiguity, emptiness, enlightenment, consciuosness / awareness, and dharma are the main Buddhist philosophy, especially Mahayana, which called Buddha Zen in Japan. According to Kurokawa, modern architecture has no soul. By using symbiosis method, he can manifest the soul to his work. The research would be analyzed by using descriptive qualitative method 'how' and 'what' symbiosis was done by Kurokawa upon three elements which influenced his work: modern architecture, Buddhist Philosophy, and Japanese tradition.
