    A Study of Noun Phrases Used in Shannon Messenger’s Novel Let The Sky Fall

    Abstract
    This paper dealed with noun phrase. The objective was to find out the functions of noun phrases used in Shannon Messenger’s novel “Let The Sky Fall”. In order to get needed result, the data were taken from the story of the novel. The data, then, were studied based on the functions. From the study, the writer used five functions of noun phrase used in the novel, they were as subject, direct object, prepositional complement, noun phrase modifier and determinative. The most dominant of noun phrase used in the novel was as noun phrase modifier with 76 sentences or 29%, and then as direct object with 64 sentences or 24.4%, as prepositional complement with 57 sentences or 21,7%, as subject with 47 sentences or 17,9% and as determinative with 18 sentences or 6,9%.
     
    Kertas karya ini berkaitan dengan frasa kata benda. Tujuannya adalah untuk menemukan fungsi-fungsi dari frasa kata benda yang digunakan dalam novel Shannon Messenger “Let the sky fall”. Untuk mendapatkan hasil yang dibutuhkan, data yang diambil dari cerita novel. Data kemudian dipelajari berdasarkan fungsi-fungsinya. Dari penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan lima fungsi dari frasa kata benda yang digunakan dalam novel, dan mereka adalah sebagai subject, direct object, prepositional complement, noun phrase modifier dan determinative. Frasa kata benda paling dominan yang digunakan pada novel adalah frasa kata benda sebagai noun phrase modifier dengan 76 kalimat atau 29%, kemudian sebagai direct object dengan 64 kalimat atau 24,4%, sebagai prepositional complement dengan 57 kalimat atau 21,7%, sebagai subject dengan 47 kalimat atau 17,9% dan sebagai determinative dengan 18 kalimat atau 6,9%.
