The Description of Gerund Used in Sophie Morgan’s Novel The Diary of A Submissive

Abstract

This paper entitled The Description of Gerund used in Sophie Morgan’s novel namely The Diary of a Submissive, the novel gives a brief description about gerund concerning on its functions. The writer uses the descriptive quantitative method to determine the most dominant gerund. The objectives of this research were: 1. To find out and classify the functions of gerund used in The Diary of a Submissive novel. 2. To find out the most dominant functions of gerund used in The Diary of a Submissive novel. The source data was The Diary of a Submissive from chapter 1-10 and the data were sentences using the gerund. The result of this research was presented in descriptive way, there are gerund as a subject 12 (17,40%), gerund as a object 25 (36,23%), gerund as a complement 4 (5,80%), gerund after preposition 22 (31,88%), gerund after certain verbs 6 (8,70%). The most dominant gerund is a object.

Kertas karya yang berjudul The Description of Gerund used in Sophie Morgan’s novel yaitu The Diary of a Submissive memberikan penjelasan singkat tentang gerund pada fungsinya. Penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kuantitatif untuk menentukan gerund yang paling dominan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah: 1. Untuk menemukan dan mengklasifikasikan fungsi gerund yand digunakan dalam novel The Diary of a Submissive. 2. Untuk menemukan fungsi gerund yang paling dominan yang di gunakan dalam novel The Diary of a Submissive. Sumber data novel The Diary of a Submissive dari bab 1-10 dan datanya ialah kalimat-kalimat yang menggunakan gerund. Hasil dari penelitian ini adalah presentasi dalam cara deskriptif, yaitu gerund sebagai subjek 12 (17,40%), gerund sebagai objek 25 (36,23%), gerund sebagai pelengkap 4 (5,80%), gerund setelah kata depan 22 (31,88%), gerund setelah kata kerja tertentu 6 (8,70%). Gerund yang paling dominan adalah gerund sebagai objek.
