Analysis of Students’ Understanding of Idiomatic Expressions and Its Use in Their Essay: A Case Study

Abstract

This research deals with students‟ understanding of idiomatic expressions and its use in their essay. This study attempts to discover the types of idiomatic expressions in the essays of the 4th semester of English Department students‟ of University of Sumatera Utara and their understanding of it. In conducting this research, the writer applies both field and library research with qualitative approach, that is analysing the types found in 10 students‟ essays and doing an interview sessions with 7 students in order to assess their understanding of idiomatic expressions. Based on the analysis and its findings, there are three types of idiomatic expressions found in the students‟ essays, those are Verb + object/complement (and/or adverbial), Prepositional Phrases, and Compound. Whilst, the results of their understanding of idiomatic expressions through interview session show that 6 of 7 were not able in passing the first facet of Six Facets of Understanding which is Explanation, while 1 of 7 students could pass all facets and categorized as the only student who understands about idioms. The results show that actually some of the 4th semester of English Department students of University of Sumatera Utara with high achievement are quite familiar with idioms in writing an essay even if some of them failed in passing the facets of its understanding.

Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap idiom dan penggunaannya pada esai mereka. Dalam penelitian ini, penulis mencoba menemukan tipe-tipe idiom yang terdapat pada esai mahasiswa Sastra Inggris tingkat II, Universitas Sumatera Utara dan pemahaman mereka terhadapnya. Dalam melakukan penelitian ini, penulis menerapkan penelitian lapangan dan studi pustaka dengan pendekatan kualitatif, yaitu menganalisis tipe-tipe idiom yang terdapat pada 10 esai mahasiswa dan melakukan sesi wawancara dengan 7 mahasiswa guna mengkaji pemahaman mereka terhadap idiom. Berdasarkan analisis dan temuannya, ada tiga tipe idiom yang ditemukan dalam esai mahasiswa, yaitu Verb + object/complement (and/or adverbial), Prepositional Phrases, dan Compound. Sementara itu, hasil pengkajian pemahaman mahasiswa terhadap idiom melalui sesi wawancara, menunjukkan bahwa 6 dari 7 mahasiswa tidak mampu melewati faset pertama dari Six Facet of Understanding, yaitu Explanation. Sedangkan, 1 dari 7 mahasiswa mampu melewati seluruh faset dan dikategorikan sebagai satu-satunya mahasiswa yang paham akan idiom. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan, bahwa faktanya mahasiswa Sastra Inggris tingkat II, Universitas Sumatera Utara dengan pencapaian nilai yang tinggi, cukup familiar dengan idiom, dibuktikan dengan hasil penelitian dimana 5 dari 10 mahasiswa menggunakan idiom pada esai mereka walaupun beberapa dari mereka gagal melewati aspek-aspek pemahaman yang diberikan.
