Perlocutionary Acts Found in “The Boss Baby” Movie

Abstract

This research focuses on the kinds of perlocutionary acts based on by John. R. Searle’s theory in The Boss Baby movie directed by Tom Mc Grath. The movie script used to gather the data. This research tries to reveal whether the expected perlocutionary acts is fulfilled by the hearers involved in the conversation in this movie. The aim of this research is to find out the classification of perlocutionary acts performed by the speakers in the movie dialogues and to evaluate whether the hearers will respond to the same way the speaker is expecting. The methodology used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. The data are collected by watching the movie and reading all of the dialogues. After that, the writer classifies the speech acts found in the dialogues based on Searle’s theoretical framework. The result of this study shows that perlocutionary acts used in The Boss Baby movie. Based on the research finding, there are five types of perlocutionary acts which are used in the movie. Those types are representative, expressive, commissive, directives and declaratives. The writer found 25 data, there are representative consists of 9 data, expressives consists of 3 data, commisive consists of 3 data, directives consists of 7 data and declaratives consists of 1 data. Furthermore, the analysis also shows that perlocutionary acts expected by the speakers in this movie are fulfilled by the hearers.

Penelitian ini berfokus pada jenis tindakan perlokusi berdasarkan teori John. R. Searle dalam film The Boss Baby yang disutradarai oleh Tom Mc Grath. Naskah film digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Penelitian ini mencoba mengungkap apakah tindakan perlokusi yang diharapkan terpenuhi oleh pendengar yang terlibat dalam percakapan di film ini. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui klasifikasi tindakan perlokusi yang dilakukan oleh pembicara dalam dialog film dan untuk mengevaluasi apakah pendengar akan merespons dengan cara yang sama seperti yang diharapkan oleh pembicara. Metodologi yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan menonton film dan membaca semua dialog. Berikutnya, penulis mengklasifikasikan tindak tutur yang ditemukan dalam dialog berdasarkan kerangka teori Searle. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa tindakan perlokusi digunakan dalam film The Boss Baby. Berdasarkan temuan penelitian, ada lima jenis tindakan perlokusi yang digunakan dalam film. Tipe-tipe tersebut adalah representatif, ekspresif, komisif, direktif, dan deklaratif. Penulis menemukan 25 data, yaitu representatif terdiri dari 9 data, ekspresif terdiri dari 3 data, komisive terdiri dari 3 data, direktif terdiri dari 7 data dan deklaratif terdiri dari 1 data. Selain itu, analisis dari penelitian ini juga menunjukkan bahwa tindak perlokusi yang diharapkan oleh pembicara dalam film ini terpenuhi oleh pendengar.
