    An Analysis of Hedges in Boris Johnson’s Brexit Speech

    Abstract
    This thesis is entitled as “An Analysis of Hedges in Boris Johnson’s Brexit Speech”. It is a study about the analysis of hedges found in Boris Johnson‟s (BJ) British Exit (Brexit) Speech at Policy Exchange on February 14, 2018. The aims of this research are (i) to find out the types of hedges that found in BJ‟s Brexit speech and (ii) to find out the function of each hedge that found in BJ‟s Brexit speech. Data source of this research were lingual utterances taken from BJ‟s Brexit Speech retrieved from https://brexitcentral.com/full-text-video-boris-johnsons-brexit-speech. The data of this research were the 102 lingual utterances containing hedges found in BJ‟s Brexit speech. Qualitative method was used as the method of research. Documentary technique was used as the data collecting procedure and the data analysis technique of this research applied the Interactive Model by Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014). The main theory of this research were the theory of hedges proposed by Lakoff (1973), types of hedging construction from Heng & Tan (2002), and function of hedges from Coates (1996). The result of this research found that Boris Johnson employed all six types of hedges. The results of this research found that BJ employed all six types of hedges, namely 40 (forty) Adverbials (39.21%), 8 (eight) Epistemic Verbs (7.84%), 34 (thirty-four) Modal Verbs (33.33%), 10 (ten) Cognition Verbs (9.80%), 9 (nine) Hypothetical Constructions (8.82%) and 1 (one) Anticipatory it- Clause (1%). The function of each hedge and its frequency in BJ utterances are the expression of doubt and less (more) confidence (62 data), the function of hedges would be sensitive to others feeling (28 data), searching for the right word (5 data), and avoid the appearance of playing the expert (7 data).
     
    Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Hedges in Boris Johnson’s Brexit Speech” yaitu analisis hedges di dalam pidato Boris Johnson (BJ) tentang British Exit (Brexit) di Policy Exchange pada 14 Februari 2018. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (i) untuk menemukan tipe hedges di dalam pidato Brexit BJ dan (ii) untuk menemukan fungsi tiap hedges dalam pidato Brexit BJ. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah ujaran lingual di dalam pidato Brexit BJ yang diambil dari https://brexitcentral.com/full-text-video-boris-johnsons-brexit-speech. Data dari penelitian ini adalah 102 ucapan bahasa yang mengandung hedges yang ditemukan di dalam pidato Brexit BJ. Metode kualitatif digunakan pada penelitian ini sebagai metode penelitian. Teknik dokumentasi digunakan pada penelitian ini sebagai prosedur pengumpulan data dan teknik analisis data pada penelitian menerapkan model interaktif oleh Miles, Huberman & Saldana (2014). Teori utama pada penelitian ini adalah teori hedges yang dikemukakan oleh Lakoff (1973), tipe-tipe konstruksi hedges dari Heng & Tan (2002), dan fungsi hedges dari Coates (1996). Hasil dari penelitian ini menemukan bahwa BJ menggunakan keenam tipe bentuk hedges, yaitu 40 (empat puluh) Adverbials (39.21%), 8 (delapan) Epistemic Verbs (7.84%), 34 (tiga puluh empat) Modal Verbs (33.33%), 10 (sepuluh) Cognition Verbs (9.80%), 9 (sembilan) Hypothetical Constructions (8.82%) dan 1 (satu) Anticipatory it- Clause (1%). Fungsi tiap hedges dan frekuensinya pada ucapan BJ adalah ekspresi dari ragu dan kurang (lebih) percaya diri (62 data), fungsi hedges yang peka terhadap perasaan orang lain (28 data), mencari kata yang tepat (5 data), dan menghindari penampilan sebagai ahli (7 data).
