Racial Discrimination Portrayed in Angie Thomas’s Novel The Hate U Give

Abstract

This thesis entitled Racial Discrimination Portrayed in Angie Thomas‟s Novel The Hate U Give. This thesis contains an analysis of the racial discrimination portrayed in the novel The Hate U Give. The aims of this thesis are (i) to find out how racial discrimination portrayed in the novel The Hate U Give, (ii) to find out the characteristics of racial discrimination portrayed in the novel The Hate U Give. The writer used sociology of literature as the main theory, and the characteristics that related to discriminations such as stereotype, prejudice and rejection in analyzing the problems. In completing the analysis, the writer used qualitative descriptive method. The data of the researcher are word, sentence and clause that refer to characteristics of racial discrimination in Angie Thomas‟s novel as the source of the data. The findings showed that the characteristics of racial discrimination like stereotypes, prejudice, and social rejection are found in Angie Thomas‟s Novel.

Skripsi ini berjudul Diskriminasi Rasial yang digambarkan dalam novel Angie Thomas The Hate U Give. Skripsi ini berisi analisis diskriminasi rasial yang digambarkan dalam novel The Hate U Give. Tujuan dari skripsi ini adalah (i) untuk mengetahui bagaimana diskriminasi rasial digambarkan dalam novel The Hate U Give, (ii) untuk mengetahui karakteristik diskriminasi sosial yang digambarkan dalam novel The Hate U Give. Penulis menggunakan sosiologi sastra sebagai teori utama, dan karakteristik yang berkaitan dengan diskriminasi seperti stereotip, prasangka dan penolakan dalam menganalisis permasalahan. Dalam menyelesaikan analisis, penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data dari peneliti adalah kata, kalimat,dan klausa yang pada karakteristik diskriminasi rasial dalam novel Angie Thomas sebagai sumber data. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa karakteristik diskriminasi rasial seperti stereotip, prasangka, dan penolakan sosial ditemukan dalam Novel Angie Thomas.
