An Analysis of Politeness Found in The Kelly Clarkson Show

Abstract

This thesis entitled “An Analysis of Politeness Found in The Kelly Clarkson Show”. The aim of this thesis is to discuss about the kinds and the functions of maxim of politeness which is used in The Kelly Clarkson Show. There are two theories that used in doing this research, the first is theory that proposed by Leech Principles of Pragmatics (1983) and the second is a theory proposed by Searly Speech-event (1979). In doing this research the writer uses the descriptive and qualitative to analyze the research by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2004). The source of data in this thesis is taken from the YouTube videos The Kelly Clarkson Show. The data are the utterances of the host and guests in the videos. The result of this research shows that there are three kinds of maxim of politeness that found in The Kelly Clarkson Show. The most dominant maxim that used in these videos is Approbation Maxim, because there are 57 utterances belong to this maxim. The next is Agreement Maxim there are 3 utterances belong to this maxim. The last one, there are 2 utterances belong to Modesty Maxim. Then, the function of all maxim in this talk show is Convivial and Collaborative and viewed from the Searly‟s concept some of them belong to Expressive Speech-event and also Assertive Speech-event.

Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Politeness Found in The Kelly Clarkson Show”. Skripsi ini bertujuan untuk membahas jenis-jenis dan fungsi maksim prinsip kesopanan yang digunakan di suatu acara The Kelly Clarkson Show. Dalam mengeyelesaikan penelitian in ada dua jenis teori yang digunakan yang pertama adalah teori prinsip kesopanan oleh Leech (1983) dan teori peristiwa tutur oleh Searle (1979). Dalam melakukan penelitian ini penulis menggunakan teori yang dikemukakan oleh Miles, Huberman dan Saldana (2014) yaitu deskriptif dan kualitatif. Suber data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah video yang ada di kanal Youtube The Kelly Clarkson Show. Data dalam skripsi ini adalah ujaran-ujaran dari pembawa acara dan juga tamu-tamu yang terdapat didalam video. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ada tiga jenis maksim yang terdapat didalam ujaran The Kelly Clarkson Show. Maksim yang paling banyak ditemukan adalah maksim penghargaan yaitu sebanyak 57 ujaran, selanjutnya 3 ujaran yang merupakan maksim kesepakatan, dan yang terakhir ditemukan 2 ujaran yang merupakan maksim kesederhanaan. Kemudian, fungsi dari semua maksim yang ditemukan di dalam di talk show adalah convivial dan collaborative, dan melihat dari konsep yang dikemukakan oleh Searly sebagian besar maksim ini termasuk kedalam ekspresif dan asertif.
