An Analysis of Paralinguistic Features Used by Students of The English Department Universitas Sumatera Utaravvv

Abstract

The title of this thesis is ‗An Analysis of Paralinguistic Features Used By The Students of the English Department Universitas Sumatera Utara‘. The aim of the research is to find out what paralinguistic features are used by the students and how is the production of those paralinguistic features. The research scoped only to the features available analyzed by PRAAT as the research instrument they are pitch, intonation, loudness, and tempo. The researcher uses qualitative research and the data were taken from the English department students‘ ―speaking‖ project. The interpretation of the data shows that each student uses the same features in speaking but produces features in different ways. This research aims to explain the importance of paralinguistic features in speaking by seeing their paralinguistic features productions using PRAAT. The researcher found that some of the students produce low pitches and loudness in their speaking and some use high. There is a significant difference between men and women speakers in producing pitch. Some students speak in a monotonous and some have a melodious way of speaking. The tempo of speaking also affects someone‘s speaking and in this research it is found that some students tend to speak faster, slower, and on the average rate of speaking. The result reveals that the students and the lecturer need to give more attention to the paralinguistic features and the production to build good speaking.

Skripsi ini berjudul ‗ Sebuah Analisis Aspek-Aspek Paralinguistik Yang Digunakan Oleh Mahasiswa Departemen Sastra Inggris, Universitas Sumatera Utara‘. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk melihat aspek-aspek paralinguistik apa saja yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa Sastra Inggris dan bagaimana produksi dari aspek-aspek paralinguistic tersebut. Penelitian ini hanya mencakup aspek-aspek yang dapat di analisis dengan menggunakan PRAAT sebagai instrumen penelitian yaitu pitch, intonasi, volume dan tempo. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dan data diambil dari tugas ―Berbicara‖ mahasiswa Sastra Inggris. Interpretasi data menunjukkan bahwa setiap siswa menggunakan aspek paralinguistik yang sama dalam berbicara tetapi memproduksi aspek-aspek dengan cara yang berbeda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan pentingnya aspek-aspek paralinguistik dalam berbicara dengan melihat produksi fitur paralinguistiknya dengan menggunakan PRAAT. Peneliti menemukan bahwa beberapa mahasiswa memproduksi pitch dan volume yang rendah dan beberapa mahasiswa memproduksi pitch dan volume yang tinggi. Terdapat juga perbedaan yang signifikan antara mahasiswa pria dan wanita dalam memproduksi pitch. Beberapa siswa berbicara dengan nada yang monoton dan beberapa mahasiswa memproduksi nada yang bervariasi. Tempo dalam berbicara juga mempengaruhi pembicaraan seseorang dan dalam penelitian ini ditemukan bahwa beberapa mahasiswa cenderung berbicara lebih cepat, lambat, dan juga dengan kecepatan berbicara rata-rata.
